"and Abram journeyed on by stages toward the Negeb."
Genesis 12:9 New Revised Standard Version
commentary
People of faith, even the ones who may not like to travel, often use the word "journey" when speaking of spiritual growth. It has about it the ring of adventure: the encounter with new places, languages, people and ideas.
While actual journeys may lead to experiences of wonder and pleasant interact with perfect strangers, they can also be full of tedious details: packing and unpacking, checking tickets and passports and meeting unpleasant strangers and getting lost in unfamiliar places. When Abraam and Sarai left for parts unknown they loaded themselves up with everything familiar. While they may have left the family home, apparently they brought all of its contents! Perhaps their ponderous baggage was a way of being comforted and soothed as they continually bumped into the strangementss of new lands.
