The Communion Fund

When members and friends receive Pledge Envelopes as a way to make their financial commitment to the ministries of Immanuel Church, there is an extra envelop for the first Sunday of every month. Contributions through this 'communion envelope' become part of The Communion Fund, which is a discretionary fund that is overseen by our Senior Pastor. It is frequently used when citizens in our community request emergency assistance for utility bills, groceries or clothing, especially during the major holidays.

If you do not use pledge envelopes, but would like to make a special contribution to The Communion Fund, please do so by including the name of the fund on the memo line of your check. And please know how much joy is brought to the people of our region through this additional expression of our mission!

Backpacks Delivered to Noah Webster

8/21/07
Peter Haberlandt and my daughter Winnie and I delivered the backpacks to Noah Webster today and the fourth grade teachers were there to receive them!

The backpacks were received by 4th grade teachers Paul Wallen, Pam Brunell, Amanda Reese, and student teacher Kate Rickenback. Each class has a different color backpack. Mrs. Brunell's class has had the lime green backpacks for two years now because the class mascot is a frog. Mrs. Brunell commented that it was great fun to see the children lined up by class in the morning before school, each class carrying their backpacks of red, blue or green.

This is the generosity of Immanuel folks once again making a visible, tangible, and strengthening impact on our neighborhood. A Heartfelt thank you to the congregation, from the SAMC committee. -- Annelieke Schauer

Second Annual AIDS Walk sponsored by Latino Community Services

Several of the youth and 7-8th grade students walked in the Second Annual AIDS Walk sponsored by Latino Community Services on Sunday, April 22, 2007. This walk was to increase awareness of AIDS in the Latino Community and raise money for AIDS education. It was a gorgeous day on the Riverfront in Hartford, and we had a great time.

Walkers included Sarah Kline Morgan, Peter Haberlandt, Rebecca Biklen, Blanche Biklen, Nancy Allen, Camille Roberts, Adam Aker, Mariella MacGillis, Sarah Fuller, Annelieke Schauer, and Erica Roggeveen Byrne and David Byrne worked the registration tables of the walk.

Immanuel really stepped up to the plate on this walk, and contributed a sizable donation and provided a nice cadre of walkers.

loaves and fishes signAt Immanuel Church we believe that all of our members are called and gifted for ministry in the name of the Christ who comes to heal, challenge and make new. Therefore, we seek to provide a broad range of opportunities for our members to offer their gifts and skills in the context of urban ministry. Some of these programs are carried out by Immanuel members, and others involve the forging of partnerships with communities of faith and civic organizations. In all that we do we seek to be for the citizens of Hartford an experience of empowerment, friendship and companionship on the journey towards greater life.

Throughout these pages you will find information on opportunities for service that are of particular importance to us: Habitat for Humanity, Heifer Project International, Walk Against Hunger, Loaves & Fishes, Mentoring programs, Crossroads Community Learning Programs and more.

Annual Walk Against Hunger

On Sunday, May 6, 2007 at 1 pm, FOODSHARE hosted its 24th Annual WALK AGAINST HUNGER. Beginning and ending at The Hartford Financial Services Group, the walk took us on a 3 mile trek through Hartford’s historic West End. It was a beautiful day!

The Noah Webster Project has been the major 2005/2006 initiative of the ICC Social Action & Mission Committee (SAMC).

The creation of a Family Resource Center (FRC) at the newly rebuilt and reconfigured Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School in Hartford’s West End neighborhood is the goal.

This task has been undertaken in collaboration with three Hartford area faith based institutions—The First Church of Christ Congregational/West Hartford, The Unitarian/Universalist Church/Bloomfield Ave. and the United Methodist Church of Hartford/Farmington Ave.

This Family Resource Center hopes to offer a variety of programs/courses, which will serve the needs of the community of magnet school children, parents and caregivers.

The project has been divided into phases:

The initial phase, already completed, dealt with securing, designing and appropriately furnishing a dedicated space at the school. This included purchasing attractive durable furniture for adults and for children, supplying a new refrigerator and a microwave oven.

A second phase entailed the purchase and stocking of backpacks with pencils, paper, crayons and rulers for approximately 80 fourth grade students, as well as orchestrating a book drive, held by the collaborating congregations, which secured several hundred books for the Resource Center. A further result has been the recruiting of volunteer reading tutors from the participating congregations who will be trained and who have committed to reading with a child once a week during the current school year.

The next phase will deal with determining and implementing programs to be offered at the FRC. Presently the committee is seeking input from the staff and from the parents/caregivers of the students at the Noah Webster School as to programs that would address needs within the Noah Webster community. Under consideration are programs focusing on successful parenting, common sense parenting, and a learner centered family literacy curriculum.

The magnet school principal and staff are appreciative and supportive of this collaborative effort of the involved area churches.

The SAMC in collaboration with the other stakeholders hopes to sustain its efforts in developing and maintaining this Family Resource Center.
