The Chancel Choir

Music is an integral part of worship at Immanuel Church. The Chancel Choir numbers approximately 40 singers and is comprised of both professional and amateur singers. These are amateurs in the best sense of the word — they love singing and strive diligently to improve their craft. They provide music for weekly worship with repertoire representing a variety of musical periods and styles — from early English anthems with viols and gambas to a Caribbean Mass with steel drums. Membership is open to all members and friends of Immanuel by audition with Mark Singleton , Music Director . Donald Funk is the Organist.

Why I sing in the choir

I sing at Immanuel primarily because I love to sing.  I sing there, too, because the choir is very good, dedicated, and under the direction of a talented, devoted leader.  Lastly, I sing because worship for me is mostly a matter of raising my voice in song and thrilling to the sound of great music.  Some churches have decided to give over to "praise" music to lure younger congregants.  There is nothing wrong with an everyday style of music in church, but I believe that Immanuel worshippers love what we do.    Striving for the highest level of art is surely reaching for God.  It is beauty in its purest form.  If Bach, Mozart, and Brahms wrote for the glory of God, then we can do no better than to give our best to convey that to our congregation.  That is why I sing at Immanuel Church.

My Choir Experience

Many years ago, my mother dragged my brother and me, both protesting vehemently, down the street to our neighborhood church and signed us up for the children’s choir. She didn’t know whether we could sing. That particular brother went on to other interests, but I was hooked. At thirteen, I moved to the adult Sanctuary Choir and began my love affair with standard church music; we sang a wide range of choral anthems and spirituals as well as hymns (the non-inclusive language versions.) I learned discipline, how to sing on pitch, and how to read music. Although I left home and didn’t sing chorally for many years, I never lost those early learnings and love for church music. When I came to Immanuel and heard its Chancel Choir, I knew I had come home. It took me a few months to work up the nerve to ask to sing, but I’ve never regretted it--- in spite of the impression my Sunday morning complaints about singing descants might give. The choir has been blessed in its directors; both Larry Allen and Mark Singleton are terrific musicians, but more importantly, they’ve been wonderful teachers. Their musical choices have been a joy to sing. Don Funk has become a wonderful asset to our music making and our humor. I appreciate the challenge and “stretch” of working with such fine singers to maintain the level of quality music the choir produces so consistently. Finally, I love the focus of the choir as worship leaders and an integral part of the worship service at Immanuel. As another of my brothers, also a choral singer often reminds me,” (S)He who sings prays twice.” I hope to lift my voice with this choir for many more years.
