Focus on South Marshall Street

South Marshall Street, just two blocks from Immanuel, is home to diverse residents who seek to thrive despite, for some, economic challenges or for others being immigrants in a new world.

In 2011, members of Immanuel conducted fifty one-on-one listening conversations with our Immanuel neighbors and decided to focus our energies and help on South Marshall Street.

Over the years, we slowly developed relationships with (1) the residents of Marshall House, a shelter for homeless children and families; (2) the many Burmese and Nepali refugees who live in one huge apartment complex; (3) Habitat for Humanity home owners who occupy 23 relatively new condos and duplexes; and (4) the many residents of four Section 8 apartment buildings.

Immanuel has been joined in our efforts by representatives from numerous faith communities and social service agencies.  Current active participation includes Asylum Hill Neighborhood Association (AHNA), Grace Lutheran Church, Wheeler Clinic and the Salvation Army, while many other groups actively contribute to specific initiatives.

Efforts to foster community organizing and more direct service outreach have proven challenging, but we continue to advocate for the neighborhood and to reach out regularly.

Each summer we sponsor a block party that draws hundreds of residents, who not only enjoy fun activities like a bounce house and lively entertainment but who also appreciate the opportunity to learn about the resources from 40 non-profit agencies.   Other “pop-up” events throughout the year bring smiles to children’s faces and pumpkins (October), Santa (December) and spring treats in April or May.
